Google Doodle Honours Late Kenyan Activist, Wangari Maathai
Google Doodle celebrated the life of the late Kenyan environmental and political activist, Wangari Maathai, on April 1. Maathai was born on 1 April 1940 and was educated in the United States as well as the University of Nairobi in Kenya. She founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental NGO focused on planting trees, environmental conservation, and the rights of women.
She received several awards in her lifetime including the Right Livelihood Award and became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Price for her contributions to sustainable development, democracy and peace in 2004. An elected member of the Kenyan Parliament and assistant minister for Environment and Natural Resources, Maathai died in 2011 as a result of complications from ovarian cancer.
